I haven’t had a PC that I havent’ been able to get running in over 5 years.. Got one now.. I’m retrying a repair install of win xp sp2 and now putting sp3 on. There is still a lot of weird stuff going on with permissions.
My point is that it seems that the hacking landscape has radically changed in the last 6 months. One news item that caught my eye was that Iran is planning hacking attacks against the US.
It seems that many of the procedures and tools that worked well in the past are no longer effective. My plan is to select and add more tools to my toolbox and urge as much prevention as possible.
Some things you should be doing:
- Run with the least amount of administrative rights that you possibly can. This is the key to preventing infections.
- Back up your data regularly so that you can completely rebuild a machine if necessary.
- Be aggressive in applying security patches for the OS and all apps.
- Be more aggressive with malware scans.
