A quick and easy way to hide the task bar in Windows 10 and 11

Occasionally, the task bar in Windows will refuse to hide. There is a quick way to fix this

The problem

A couple of times each day, the task bar will remain visible and not hide. This can be extremely annoying when you are in the middle of working. This is especially annoying when the windows you are working on have input fields at the bottom.

A quick fix

You can get the taskbar to hide again by restarting Windows Explorer in your task manager. The process is simple:

  • Start task manager. (Control-Alt-Delete should give you the ability to start the task manager)
  • Right-click on ‘Windows Explorer’
  • Choose restart
Find Windows Explorer in the Task Manager
Find Windows Explorer in the Task Manager
Restarting Windows Explorer to allow the taskbar to hide.
Restarting Windows Explorer to allow the taskbar to hide.

That should recycle the taskbar and will USUALLY not result in any loss of data. This does NOT restart Windows, but rather, it restarts Windows Explorer

NOTE – there is always a small possibility that you could lose data.

NOTE – If there was a dialog open that was causing the task bar to not hide, you will not see the dialog. I have not had any problems resulting from this.
